Reinke Shakes must be installed directly over solid sheeting. Solid Sheeting may be obtained in a couple of ways: 1. If there is plywood sheeting or ship-lap boards below the existing shingles, we recommend you remove the shingles and then install Reinke Shakes. 2. If there are spaced boards and 1 layer of wood shingles, you may want to go directly over the wood shingles with 3/8" plywood and then install Reinke Shakes. If you use this method, make sure you keep the nais at least 2" from the edges of the plywood to prevent it from being pulled in too far. Also make sure the nails are long enough to reach solid wood. This method can be successfully used over 3 layers (1 wood and 2 asphalt), BUT, make sure the rafters can handle the additional 150 lbs. of plywood and 46 lbs. of shingles. For UL Class A, Reinke Shakes presently requires being underlayed with 5/8" Gypson board or 1/4" Georgia Pacific dens decking.
